My son stole a shirt from Walmart! What will happen?

QUESTION:  My son was arrested in Covington, GA for shoplifting a shirt from Walmart. He just got hired and he needed a dress shirt to start work and instead of asking me and being a burden he thought it was easier to just take the shirt. I am a single mom of 8 kids, but he has always been too proud to ask for anything.

ANSWER: This is a misdemeanor charge, however, he will still have to face the consequences.  It is a criminal charge and the maximum punishment is 12 months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000. It is unlikely that this would happen but it is the punishment that the law allows.  He is likely looking at probation, a fine, court ordered fees, and community service.  If he cannot retain private counsel, he would likely qualify for a public defender.
